This project aspires to be a completely student-led online journal, offering a platform to showcase our passion and dedication to STEM. Additionally, we aim to promote an egalitarian vision for the future of our healthcare system. Our mission is to shine a light on the growing disparities in the treatment of different genders within today's healthcare landscape.

Despite society's considerable progress in reducing sexism, the issues of prejudice, misdiagnosis, and lack of treatment towards women in healthcare remain inadequately addressed. These critical concerns are often overlooked. In our fast-paced culture, we rapidly shift from one trend to another, similarly moving from one social issue to the next, often neglecting substantial problems that continue to persist beneath the surface. Our aim is to bring these underlying issues to the forefront and ensure they receive the attention they deserve.

Our journal is designed for students, educators, healthcare professionals, and anyone with an interest in STEM and social justice. We aim to engage a broad audience and foster a community of like-minded individuals committed to positive change.

We aim to feature a variety of content, including (but not limited to): research articles, opinion pieces and reviews of recent developments, and topical discussions. While our primary focus is on female health, our articles also cover a variety of scientific developments, ensuring an interesting read for anyone.

However, this project is not solely driven by a handful of individuals; we invite everyone with a passion for our mission to actively participate. You can contribute by proposing article ideas or submitting your own work.

We envision this project thriving and sustaining itself like a beating heart, driven by the passion of individuals like you. If you wish to share your story, your interests, or a piece of your heart, we warmly invite you to become deeply involved. It is people like you who will keep this vibrant community alive and flourishing. For more information on how to get involved, please visit our "Contact Us" page.

Our name, Layman's Journal, originates from the phrase "in layman's terms", capturing our vision of breaking down complex ideas into language that’s accessible to everyone. We envision this project as a bridge between intricate subjects and everyday understanding, creating a space where knowledge is simplified, relatable, and engaging. Through thoughtful storytelling and clear, jargon-free explanations, Layman's Journal aims to make information approachable, empowering readers from all walks of life to stay informed and inspired by the world around them.

Personal Testimonies

Alolika Kundu

As the creator of this student-led project, I am dedicated to overseeing its development and impact. My personal experiences over the past few years have revealed significant gaps in the healthcare system, particularly in how it addresses women's health needs. Living with PCOS has deepened my awareness of these systemic flaws and the societal challenges surrounding female health. Rather than accepting these shortcomings, I am committed to advocating for change and promoting a more equitable healthcare landscape. However, this project is not a solitary effort; I have assembled a core team of passionate individuals who share a deep commitment to this cause. Together, we fervently strive to amplify voices, raise awareness, and drive meaningful progress towards a healthcare system that sees and hears everyone.

Khadijah Shaikh

Observing my brother undergo multiple heart surgeries with exceptional care and precision from his medical team sparked my awareness of the stark contrast in healthcare accessibility worldwide, particularly in developing countries.  This disparity became even more personal as I witnessed my grandmother in Pakistan navigate a healthcare system that offered inadequate solutions despite numerous appointments and consultations. These experiences have deeply fuelled my passion for advocating improved healthcare for women in underprivileged regions, and the need for doctors to provide compassionate, effective, patient-centred care.

It is this drive that has led me to join this newspaper, as I am committed to amplifying the voices of those in underserved communities who deserve the same standard of care many of us take for granted.

 Marnie Fieldsend

Over the past few years, I have developed a passion for understanding my health, searching for answers to questions that the healthcare system cannot explain. As a young female athlete, my health ties directly to my performance. Thus, I am committed to advocating for an improved awareness of female health in our society to encourage the future generation of athletes to excel. It is this drive that has led me to join this newspaper, as I am committed to amplifying the voices of those in underserved communities who deserve the same standard of care many of us take for granted.

Navya Kaur

My passion for dentistry is deeply rooted in a desire to improve female health. Witnessing the tragic loss of my aunt during the COVID pandemic in India, where the hospital lacked the care and resources to support her, is a painful reminder of the inequities many women face.Furthermore solidifying my drive to be a catalyst for change.
As an aspiring dentist, I am determined to elevate the standard of care for women in these communities but also the unjust. I firmly believe that oral health is not just a reflection of one’s overall well-being but a powerful gateway to a healthier life.I will leverage my skills, knowledge, and passion to advocate for better healthcare outcomes, raise awareness, and empower women with the tools they need to thrive. I wish to generate an opportunity for more women, regardless of their circumstances, to have the same level of high quality care that many of us take for granted.Together, we can dismantle the barriers to proper care and build a future where all women are given the healthcare they rightfully deserve.

Aamna Shahid

I am deeply dedicated to seeing this project thrive as it raises awareness for a topic close to my heart. I have had many personal experiences where I have been left wondering why women’s healthcare is as inadequate as it is today and it is this frustration that fuels my passion to advocate for change, ensuring that girls like me have access to accurate, unbiased information about our bodies. Furthermore, it is greatly important to me that we are heard and taken seriously when we speak up about our health—something that should be the norm, not the exception. I, along with the rest of the team, want to create a space where we can openly discuss and explore these topics, ensuring that everyone has the knowledge and confidence to advocate for their own health and well-being.

Nada Eldali

As a member of this project, I aim to shed light to many hidden aspects found in healthcare systems worldwide. Coming from a Middle Eastern background, I am determined to tell the stories and talk about issues that mainstream media often overlooks; from the inadequate access to healthcare to injustices that women often face, this student led journal will strive to represent every voice worldwide.

Aarushi Pathak

Having moved often, I’ve developed a deep understanding of identity, belonging, and access to rights—fueling my passion for public litigation, civil law, and human rights, particularly in immigration. Immigration law reveals the intersection of policy and humanity, and I’m driven to explore how public litigation can challenge injustices and reshape legal frameworks to protect vulnerable individuals. By connecting with those directly affected, I bring empathy and perspective to my writing, highlighting how inclusive legislation and human rights law can transform lives and empower marginalized communities.
